WORKSHOP ON COCHLEAR IMPLANTS
A two day workshop on "Cochlear Implants" was organized by Cochlear Inc and Pika Medical at AYJNIHH on 7th and 8th July 2003. It was attended by 29 staff and faculty of NIHH, faculty of AST Dept. TNMC, students and some professionals from other centers. This was an orientation programme on the basics of Cochlear Implant functioning, troubleshooting and repairing, clinical selection of candidates, Pre and Post-operative management of Cochlear implanted children and adults, changing criteria of selection etc.

Both theoretical and hands -on practical orientation was given on Cochlear Implant Mapping by Mr. Jeremy Rosser, Audiologist, Cochlear Corporation, Mr. Sajji, Clinical Audiologist, Pika Medical Corporation and Mr. Chandan Saha, Clinical Audiologist, Pika Medical Corporation.
WORKSHOPS : EAR MOULD MAKING & HEARING AID REPAIR :
Workshops on `Ear Mould Making and Hearing Aid Repair' were conducted from 14th July to 19th July 2003 and 21st July to 26th July 2003 respectively. 5 participants representing different schools and M.Sc students attended the programme.
TEACHER SUPERVISOR'S MEET :
A two day Teacher Supervisor's Meet was held on 19th and 26th July, 2003 for trained teach ers of children with hearing impairment who are involved in the supervision of practice teaching of B.Ed (HI), M.Ed (HI) at AYJNIHH. 63 trained teachers from various schools attended the meet. The purpose of the meet was to improve the practical input to the trainees and to deliberate on issues related to practice teaching. Staff from the Department of Education and teachers from Vikas Vidyalaya and Rochiram Thadani School, Mumbai were the resource persons.
WORKSHOP ON AUDITORY HABILITATION :
A three day workshop on `Auditory Habilitation' was organized at the Institute from 3rd t o 5th Sept., 2003. The workshop was conducted by Viktorija McDonell, Coordinator Paediatric Habilitation, Cochlear Asia Pacific. The workshop was attended by 40 professionals including Educators, Audiologists and SLPs from various centers in Mumbai. The workshop highlighted various procedures and strategies being used worldwide for Auditory Habilitation in young children/infants with hearing impairment.

Demonstrations and audiovisuals were used to provide better insight into the practical aspects of the strategies. The workshop was also aimed to equip professionals with skills for the habilitation of cochlear implanted children.
AWARENESS PROGRAMMES :
  • An awareness programme was organized in the month of August,2003 at Nanded (Maharashtra) for the common public and the press as part of the celebrations of the 20th Anniversary of the Institute. About 500 copies of awareness materials were distributed.
  • A second awareness programme was also conducted at Kulgaon Badlapur, for the CBR Project in the month of August 2003. In this programme, guidelines were given by the experts for strengthening the existing activities as well as to initiate new ones such as schools, service centres, counseling and guidance programmes.
EARLY IDENTIFICATION AND INTERVENTION OF HEARING IMPAIRMENT :
Orientation programme on Early identification and intervention of hearing impairment was conducted on 10th July 2003 in Parbhani Dist., of Maharashtra. 24 Teachers of HI children from Parbhani attended the programme.
REFRESHER COURSE FOR THE TEACHERS OF HEARING IMPAIRED :
Refresher courses for the Teachers of children with hearing impairment are conducted regularly by the AYJNIHH. In the current academic year, the first Refresher Course was held at Latur with the help of Badhir Vidyalaya, Latur, as per their request.

The course was conducted from 28th to 31st July, 2003. Latur is a district place with many schools for the hearing impaired. 65 trained teachers attended the course and actively participated in skill development activities and discussions.
FOUNDATION COURSE ON EDUCATION OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES :
AYJNIHH conducted the first contact programme of the foundation course in Education of Children with Disabilities- RCI- MPBOU National programme (Distant Mode) from 14th to 25th July 2003 for teachers working in the Municipalschools of Mumbai. They were deputed from Marathi, Hindi, English, Gujarati and Urdu medium schools. The lectures and discussions were geared to provide basic concepts in each disability and education of these differently abled children. The faculty and staff of NIHH as well as resource persons from various institutions shared their knowledge and provided valuable inputs during the contact programme. From the feedback received, it was revealed that the participants were highly satisfied with the lectures and practical inputs received from the centre. They also appreciated the efforts of NIHH in organizing a programme of this kind. Sustained access to technical guidance is being worked out.
ACCESS 2003 :
AYJNIHH Mumbai and SRC (NIHH), Secunderabad actively participated in the ACCESS-2003 Exhibition held at Hyderabad. The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. Satyanarayan Jatia, Hon'ble Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India. Approximately 600 clients availed of the benefit of free hearing screening out of which 202 received hearing aids under ADIP scheme. The AYJNIHH was awarded the shield for being the most interactive stall for providing services to the hearing impaired out of 150 various stalls at the exhibition. SRC, AYJNIHH was also awarded with the shield for contribution as the best sub-committee on organizing ACCESS-2003.
STATE LEVEL PARENT TRAINING AT RAIPUR, CHATTISGARH :
A Parent Training programme for parents of children with hearing impairment was conducted by AYJNIHH, Mumbai in collaboration with Pragya Mook Badhir Shala, Madhavrao Spare Shala Parisar, Budhapara, Raipur, Chattisgarh and organized by Shravan Mook Vikalanga Abhinav Sangh, Chattisgarh.
The Following points were discussed in the training programme
  • About hearing impaired schools.
  • Aspects of disabilities.
  • Role of parents of children with hearing impairment in schools.
  • Duties of teacher of children with hearing impairment in schools.
  • How to use classroom amplification in schools.
20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS OF AYJNIHH :
The Institute and its Regional Centres celebrated the 20th Anniversary on 8th and 9th August, 2003. Dr. Satyanarayan Jatia, Hon'ble Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India was the Chief Guest of the function on the 9th of August. Mr. J.F.Rebiero, Ex. Police Commissioner and Ambassador to Poland, and film actress cum social worker Ms. Asha Parekh, were the Guests for the Cultural Programme held on 8th August, 2003. A week long celebration marked by scientific deliberations and cultural programmes was arranged.
The following technical sessions were arranged for the annual day celebrations -
  1. A talk on "Managing people by Influence" by Mr. Bhushan Lawande, Director, Lawande school of Management.
  2. A talk on "Deaf students as Diverse Learners and Teachers as Agents of Change" by Dr. Ila Parasnis, Associate Professor, Rochester institute of Technology, USA.
  3. A talk on "The Effect of Hyperbaric Atmosphere on Hearing Sensitivity" by Rear Admiral V.K. Singh, Ashwini Hospital, Mumbai.
  4. A talk on "Self Management" by H.G.Sri Radhagopinath, President, Sri Sri Radhagopinath Mandir.
  5. A talk on "Application of Sensory Integration in the field of Communication Disorders" by Dr. Nirmala Venkateshwaran, RRTC, Chennai.
WORKSHOP ON CONTINUING EDUCATION MODULES :

WORKSHOP ON CONTINUING EDUCATION MODULES : To enhance the quality of life for persons with disabilities in general and those with hearing impairment in particular, the Department of Clinical Psychology, NIHH, Mumbai conducted two Continuing Education Modules entitled "CEM II : Counseling for Educators and Rehabilitation Professionals" on 25th Feb.,2003 and "CEM II : Nurturing Creativity" on 26th Feb.,2003.

The topics covered ranged from counseling and what it is, principles of counseling, educational and vocational counseling, counseling the hearing impaired, counseling for developmental and behavioural disorders and counseling issues with orthopaedically handicapped clients.
