DRAFT RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON “COMPREHENSIVE REHABILITATION OF PERSONS WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENT IN THE CONTEXT OF UNCRPD”

Women
with Disabilities
1a. Incentives in all walks of development activities; Fill posts identified for women with disabilities. Reserve jobs too on gender basis with in the constitutional provision.
1b. Additional incentives for girls in educational institutions.
2. Disability sector to link with Organisations for Women Rights and Empowerment.
3. The schools for girls do not have proper toilets and other amenities leading to increased dropouts; this would be affecting inclusive education of CWHI too.
4. Attitudinal changes need to be promoted.
Configure to vary frequency and volume.
The activity to be based on not just audio clues but also visuals. Access with respect to society: DNA dealing with HI
Fair and courteous treatment
Strong support system
Signboards, (Singapore is a good place.) Use of mobile phone and SMS
Noise cancellation technology
Hearing aid compatible with landline
3G Technology to use Internet plus SMS
More encouragement of R&D for assisitive devices including for self development.
Training in use of Technology
Training in functional English and other languages to facilitate computer and mobile phone usage.
Captioning be made compulsory for TV and movies.
It is recommended that that the deaf persons to vet the language used for captioning
Train public/emergency care givers in dealing with HI persons
Popularizing sign language among hearing population.
All eligible persons with disability seeking higher education should be given admission to the course.
Build Potential through need based text book adaptation and assessment strategies and not concessions in curriculum
Training for teachers and developing curricular framework for school readiness for young children before starting formal education
R&D for good data base
Qualitative statistics in terms of outcomes
Restructuring existing modules of human resource development in the light of UNCRPD
Development of assistive technology for independent living in order to pursue career needs ensuring equal opportunity.
Larger consultations are required before initiating Census and survey process
1. High Risk Register is recommended
2. Common protocols appropriate to region or state
3. Training to medical and non medical persons in maintaining HRR
4. Training of Rehab. Professionals
5. Encourage publication of materials
6. Adequate salaries and other benefits to be considered
7. Use of technology to make environment user friendly for PWHI. Either assistive technology or captioning, signal alerting technology, etc.
