Socio–Economic Rehabilitation
The Rehabilitation process remains incomplete till it is equipped with the Socio Economic Rehabilitation Component. Infact the Socio Economic Rehabilitation forms the most important part of the total rehab process. NIHH is trying to create such facilities by way of establishing required infrastructure. We have a full fledged Socio Economic Rehabilitation Department to take care of the socio–economic need of the hearing handicapped.
Specific Objectives
- To act as a centre for developing vocational training module for the persons with hearing impairment.
- To create vocational training opportunities for the persons with hearing impairment in rural areas in collaboration with voluntary organizations.
- To upgrade the status of vocational training for the persons with hearing impairment.
- To study the employability and placement of the persons with hearing impairment.
- To create awareness among the employers about the capabilities and potentials of the persons with hearing impairment.
- To identify suitable jobs and assess employment opportunities for the persons with hearing impairment.
- To develop strategies of placement for the persons with hearing handicapped.
- To develop guidelines for self–employment for the persons with hearing impairment.
- To train Vocational Counsellors, Employment Officers, Personnel Officers, Rehabilitation Officers and Social Workers working in the field of Socio–Economic Rehabilitation of the persons with hearing impairment.
- To provide vocational counseling, career guidance services for the persons with hearing impairment.

Details of Services:
Vocational Counselling: The department offers vocational counseling to the clients. While offering such services scholastic achievement, level of aspiration of the clients as well as of their families, socio–economic background of the clients are taken into consideration. Client's interest, aptitude and skills form the base of vocational counseling.
Vocational Training: The department has taken up the issue of vocational training at three levels like in house vocational training, collaborative vocational training and referral services for vocational training.
- In house Vocational Training: The department provides upgraded vocational training to the persons with hearing impairment in the field of Computer Applications like Certificate Course in Hardware with Internet and Multimedia and Certificate Course in Desk Top Publishing. Both the courses are recognized by Maharashtra State Board of Vocational Examination. The courses are of six months duration. The candidate should have passed S.S.C. examination to be eligible for admission of these courses. The session commences in the month of January and July. The course is offered Free of Cost.
- Collaborative Vocational Training: The institute has initiated collaborative vocational training for the hearing handicapped with NGOs and other Government organization to enhance vocational training opportunities for clients particularly in rural areas. Institute provides initial financial assistance and continued technical support to the collaborated organization in identification of trades, developing course curriculum, conducting examination and awarding certificates. As on date we have 26 collaborative vocational training centres across the country.
- Vocational Training Referral: The clients from different parts of the country require vocational training are referred to Vocational Training Centres in and around their native places. The list of vocational training centres for the persons with hearing impairment is available with us Any client is welcome to get the details from us.
Job Placement: The department assists the clients in getting employment in the Public Sectors and Government organizations. Our institute is empowered by Government of India to sponsor candidates to Public Sector and Government organizations against the vacancies reserve for Persons with Hearing Impairment like employment exchanges. Any client can enroll their name with the department to avail such facilities. Professional relationship is maintained with Private Sectors to enhance employment opportunities for the persons with hearing impairment. The department refers persons with hearing impairment for employment to Private Sectors and Small Scale Industries. Liaison with Special Employment Exchange is maintained for registration of Persons with Hearing Impairment in Special Employment Exchange for Physically Handicapped.
Self–Employment: The department assist the clients in preparing project proposals for self–employment and co–ordinates with District Industries Centre, Small Industries, Service Institutes (SISI) and financial institutes in getting the loan sanctioned. In addition, information with regard to National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation are also disseminated.
Concession and Facilities: Government of India and State Govts. Provide various concessions and facilities for the Persons with Hearing Impairment. The Department co–ordinates with the concerned organizations so that the Persons with Hearing Impairment can avail these concessions and facilities. The department issues Railway Concession Certificate to the eligible candidates on production of Disability Certificate and one passport size photograph. The Persons with Hearing Impairment is entitled to travel at 50% concessional fare. The department also offer guidance to the clients for availing the other concessions like language exemption, job reservation, scholarship, exemption of professional tax, exemption of income tax etc.

Orientation Course for the Vocational Counsellors, Employment Officers, Social Workers and Allied professional working in the field of Vocational Rehabilitation of the Hearing Handicapped.
- Seminars, Workshops for the Employers of Public and Private Sectors on Vocational Training and Employability of the Deaf.
- Short Term Courses for the Vocational Instructors of the Hearing Handicapped.
Research Oriented Activities
Development of Training Module in the trades suitable and having high employment potentials for the deaf.
- Identification of suitable rural trades having High Employment and/or Self Employment potential.
- Identification and adaptation of suitable jobs for the hearing handicapped.
Co–ordinating Activities
- Self–employment through National Handicapped Finance & Development Corporation (NHFDC).
- Implementation of provisions enshrined in the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995.
- Consultancy to NGOs.
- Setting up District Disability Rehabilitation Centres.
